RSPB

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is the UK's largest nature conservation charity, with over 1.1 million members. For the past 125 years, they have been working hard to achieve a sustainable future for nature conservation. Together with their partners, they protect threatened birds and wildlife so the UK’s towns, coast and countryside will teem with life once again. They also play a role in BirdLife International, a worldwide partnership of nature conservation organisations.

Importance of Learning through Nature for RSPB

The RSPB has over 235,000 junior and youth members as part of Wildlife Explorers and Phoenix groups, making it the largest children’s nature club in the world. They also work with schools both on reserves and as part of outreach programmes into schools. The Big Schools’ Birdwatch engages with over 90,000 pupils and teachers each year and the Education, Families & Youth Team produces quality resources and magazines for teachers, children and parents. As one of the leading environmental education organisations in Britain, its advocacy work on education policy is highly effective and internationally the RSPB’s work has touched over 100 countries.

How RSPB will develop through this project

The RSPB is aiming to connect more children with nature than ever before over the next three years. The LLN project will provide further valuable evidence that building connections with nature can improve learning outcomes at all ability levels. Resources for use across the age range will be shared and developed with partners.
